needling can work wonders on the above-mentioned conditions and many others to decrease pain and stiffness as well as improve movement.
needling is a safe Western medicine technique where sterile acupuncture
needles are used to release tight bands within/inside an over-active (spasmic) muscle.
These very fine single filament needles are inserted into the skin and
muscle targeting these “triggers points” or “knots”.
Trigger points have been proven to be a common yet large source of local pain, referred pain and restriction of movements.
Trigger points are often caused by overuse, increased stress, poor
posture or as a by-product from an injury.
One very common example of trigger
point pain – the dreaded and common tension headache!
Did you know that
headache is actually commonly caused by referred pain from active/activated trigger points in the
neck and upper shoulder? The image across is one example of the pattern
of pain (highlighted in red) caused by trigger points (marked with
How does Dry Needling help?
When the very fine needle is inserted into the
trigger point, it causes a “twitch” response that leads to the contracted tight fibres of
the muscle to then relax.
This is a very normal physiological and biological response and often has an immediate positive effect on
movement and function.
Are There Any Side Effects?
The response and tenderness varies from person to person but normally
a pin prick sensation is felt when you experience a twitch response but
this eases as the muscle relaxes.
You may experience some
soreness and a bruised sensation lasting for anything between an hour to
24 hours after the dry needling session which is somewhat similar to the achy feeling you
get after exercise.
Your specialist physiotherapist will have been
specifically trained and certified in using this technique and will be
happy to answer all of your questions if you are interested in this as a
form of therapy.
