Hamstring injuries are pretty much common in most sports and sometimes is also known as "pulled hamstrings". I recall when I was playing catching with my dad, he too had a pull hamstring and it showed pretty obviously as a bruise at the back of his thigh.
The term "pulled muscles" really describes how the muscle injury happens - usually, the hamstring muscle is by force stretched beyond its limits, and this causes micro-fibres of the muscles to tear.
Such hamstring strains are one of the most common sports injuries, and they tend to happen in activities or sports that has high speed sprinting and kicking. Most of the time, hamstring injuries is more likely to happen during the late swing and late stance phase of running, and is known to cause a lot of downtime from training and competition.
