Sprained ankles are soft tissue injuries that are caused by our ankles either twisting inwards (inversion injury) or outwards (eversion injury).
Inversion injuries happens most of the time, accounting for 85% of all ankle sprains. The reason for this is because our ankle ligaments that are located on the outside of the ankles are weaker compared to the ligaments on the inner side.
Unfortunately, many patients don't know that untreated ankle sprains will lead to chronic ankle pain and worse, instability, and this is actually treatable by our physiotherapists.
Sprained Ankle Physiotherapy Singapore
After spraining an ankle, patients will feel pain with weight bearing, walking or when the injured area is touched/pressed. Most of the time, patients will also experience swelling and find it difficult to walk because of swelling, bruising, pain and even instability. If the injury is really bad, they may not be able to walk at all with the possibility of a fracture dislocation.
Generally, most patients will find that the pain will decrease over time and their ability to move improve over a 14 - 18 days window, BUT, once the pain and swelling have subsided, there is almost always residual weaknesses, decreased balance, stillness and the worst is the loss of proprioceptive feedback, which causes our ankle to "not know" which position it is in, and hence not able to correct itself in different grounds.
Sprained Ankle Physiotherapy Singapore Treatments
Physiotherapy interventions depends a lot on the severity of the ankle sprain. If you've just hurt yourself recently, please try to not much weight or load on it before starting physiotherapy, this is to ensure that there is no additional secondary damage that will aggravate the problem and delay recovery.
In the early stage, we will use the POLICE protocol:
- Optimal Loading
Only when the patients can weight bear within comfort, then our specialist physiotherapists will begin more hands on manual therapies in combination with neuro-muscular rehabilitation. The reason for this is to target any issues such as weakness, loss of postural control, balance and stiffness.
