Waking up with a stiff neck is actually very common, even myself had experienced it multiple times, unfortunately =(
This very uncomfortable condition can be caused by a variety of neck issues and conditions, and most of the time they are related to soft tissue injuries, sprains or strains.
Stiffness in the neck can also be a symptom of underlying disorder in our cervical spine (neck). In some cases, slipped disc/disc herniation or cervical spondylosis can also lead to a stiff neck and physiotherapy will help to treat your neck.
Stiff Neck Symptoms
Symptoms of neck stiffness and/or neck pain can be a byproduct of other problems, such as a slipped disc (known medically as disc prolapse), spine bone facet joint problem...or if it's more serious, possibly a yet-to-be-diagnosed fractured spine bone (cervical fracture/broken neck).
Any types of injuries will often lead to muscle "bracing, guarding and spasms" which will lead to the stiffening/stiff neck, and is a protective mechanism to protect your neck from any further damage, and is almost always a byproduct of another injury or problem.
Also known as "Wry Neck" or "Acute Torticollis".
What happens in most cases of stiff, wry neck, patients wake up with a painful stiff neck, eventhough our necks may become "locked/stuck" following a sudden movement - our head will be locked/held in one side and the neck will be too painful to move.
The pain may radiate or travel up the neck or down to the shoulder area with painful spasms in the neck muscles too.
Stiff Neck Physiotherapy Treatments
Stiff neck can be effectively managed and treated by one of our skilled specialist spine physiotherapists, who will first assess your neck to understand and determine the main cause of the problem.
Our specialist physiotherapist will apply the heat to the neck and then apply gentle gradient/gradual pressure to each vertebra in the neck to glide and loosen them and increase the joint range of motion.
Sometimes, we may place patients with stiff neck in our computerized traction bed which give graded, gentle stretch over a period of time, and this works very with with muscle spasms.
We will also prescribe gentle stretching exercises for you to do that will help you to improve the joint and muscle movement, and decrease stiffness and hasten recovery.
