Acquired Brain Injury and Physiotherapy

For appointments/enquiries, please SMS/Call/WhatsApp xx

An Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is a form of brain damage caused by post/after birth events, more than genetic/congenital defects. ABI can cause either mental, physical, emotional and/or behavioral impairments that may be permanent or temporary. The impairments can come from either traumatic brain injury (accidents, violent assaults etc) or non-traumatic brain injury such as stroke, brain tumors or infections etc.

Brain injury is a very complex condition and situation with very varied and dramatic variances. No two patients with the same location or brain injury will have the same disabilities nor outcomes. The brain is our headquarters - once there is brain injury, the person's life WILL be adversely affected.

ABI consequences often requires patients and their families to make a major life change and adjustment, and just the fact of making that adjustment will be a critical factor in recovery in rehabilitation. So, if you know or have someone who has ABI, you must be mentally, emotionally and spiritually be ready for making decisions to change and get appropriate physiotherapy, hand therapy and occupational therapy intervention - early intervention has a very vital role in mobility and functional recovery.

Emotional Implications

ABI often causes depression, image issues, self-restrain problems, anger and problem solving issues, as well as social-related anxiety and low self esteem. Oftentimes, they lead to other complex dilemma such as social withdrawal, non employment, family and marital problems later.

What physiotherapy, occupational therapy and hand therapy will help the patient with Acquired Brain Injury is to help them by providing coping strategies that are approach-oriented to problems and challenges.

Rehabilitation - Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Hand Therapy Implications

Therapy and rehabilitation after an Acquired Brain Injury is not set in stone nor does it follow a standard set protocol or standard operating procedure, as there is so much variances and variations and outcomes and impairments. It will be a fully customized therapy approach that will be multi-disciplinary (physiotherapy, occupational therapy and hand therapy as well as speech therapy will be required) to work closely to address the different needs of the patient.
