An avulsion fracture happens when a bone breaks and a ligament or
tendon that is attached to the bone pulls a piece of the fragment of the
bone away from the fracture site. Usually, these kind of injuries typically heals
normally without any forms of surgical interventions, assuming the bone is quite near to its original site and does not cut into any other structure.
becomes much more serious when the tendon or ligament gets injured or
damaged as a result of the sharp edges of the bone fragment - in these
cases, surgeries may be required to stabilise the fragment to the broken
bone site and to prevent damage to other structures (an example is if there is a sharp bony fragment near a tendon, the tendon can be slowly cut and eventually rupture due to the sharp surface).
Also, surgery may be needed in children who sustain these
injuries on growth plates, so that their growth will not be impeded or worse, lopsided (meaning the normal side grows normally and the injured side not normally).
Typically, normal physiotherapy treatments for simple and small fractures involves Ice Therapy
and resting the affected body part - they don't usually cause any forms
of complications or complex problems after it heals. Ice decreases the swelling and pain the correspond with swelling and can be quite relaxing and comfortable for the patient.
sometimes, our orthopedic surgeons prescribe resting splints to protect the fracture site and bones/joints to prevent further damage from occurring to the broken bone. These splints are custom-made splints made in our clinics for our patients.
Once the fracture has been stabilized, we will start more active physiotherapy and hand therapy intervention such as active range of motion, scar management, swelling management before moving onto strengthening.
