Brachial plexus injuries (BPI), are damage to the nerves that make
the brachial plexus.The brachial plexus is a massive network of nerves
that conducts and transmits signals from the spinal cord (C5 – T1)to
the shoulder, arm, hand and fingers. .

Most commonly, BPI lesions are either traumatic or mechanical. It can
happen during childbirth where the baby’s shoulder is injured by a
severe twisting motion; fall from a height onto the head and shoulder
causing extreme over-stretching; direct penetrative damage by gunshot or
knife attacls; or by a violent traction of the arm.BPI can be divided into three (3) types:
- Upper brachial plexus lesion
that happens from excessive lateral neck flexion away from the
shoulder. Most common, are forceps delivery or falling on the neck.
- whole brachial plexus lesion but less frequent.
- lower brachial plexus lesion
the least frequent of all, this occurs when there is a sudden upwards
pulling on an abducted arm e.g. when someone breaks a fall by grasping
on a tree branch.
The severity of brachial plexus injuries depends on the types of nerve damaged:
- Neurapraxia which is the mildest and lightest form of nerve injury.
