Callus and Corn Podiatry Singapore
Our feet and ankles serves as the foundation to the performance of our day to day life and activities, including participating in sports and activities. Our feet helps to with stand the forces and pressures involved in movements, the constraints within our foot wear, as well as our full body weight.
Once in a while, the daily repeated forces as well as friction that occurs on different and specific parts of our foot can lead to the formation of corns and calluses. Basically, our body thickens our skin to "counter" these forces.
Corns and calluses appear as hard patches of skin, and they usually and typically form at the tip of our toes, or in between our toes, under our big toes or at the ball of our feet.
Callus and Corn Podiatry Singapore: Differences between corns and calluses
How we differentiate corns from calluses is the presence of an inner central "core", which is the main difference between a corn and a callus. Even though corns and calluses develop as our body's natural method of compensating and protection, they can become quite painful if left untreated.
There are over the shelf and counter treatments, such as corn plasters and corn paints, which only treats the symptom and provides symptomatic relief, but doesn't take away the core problem. But, what's worse is that these over the counter solutions may also damage the surrounding skin and tissue surrounding the corn if used improperly.
What Our Podiatrists Will Do
What we will do is to gently debride the hard skin of the callus so that the center of the corn can be removed safely and without pain. Our podiatrist will also recommend solutions to relieve pain, identify the core cause and prevent the corns and calluses from recurring.
We may also prescribe soft padding, soft strapping and deflective devices that can easily fit into your shoes to help your calluses heal properly and completely.
Where applicable, our podiatrist may also need to discuss the type of foot wear, and identify which foot wear that is more likely to cause corns and causes. In some instances, we may also prescribe customized orthotics insoles to evenly distribute weight bearing forces, which are custom made specifically to your feet shape and size.
