What it is, how we can help with physiotherapy

Cartilage damage – as our cartilage
structures and functions can be quite easy to be injured and harmed, which
often results in damage to cartilaginous structures. The damage is often due to
trauma (i.e. direct hit such as a fall or a road traffic accident) or a medical
condition such as inflammation etc).
At any moments, should your orthopaedic
surgeon recommends for surgery, be it shoulder repair, knee or back surgery –
it’s often advisable to engage a physiotherapist for pre-surgery physiotherapy
to strengthen the muscles around the joint before the date of surgery. What this
does is helps to accelerate recovery time after surgery, and get you back to
function and mobility as quick as you can.
What Are The Symptoms of Cartilage Damage?
When one suffers an injury involving damage to one’s cartilage, there is always
presence of the following “terrible four” – swelling (edema), painful joint,
stiffness (decreased mobility) as well an obvious decreased range of motion in
the affected joint. In cases where damage is very severe, sometimes a piece of
cartilage can break off and comes loose. This loose piece can sometimes cause
the joint to “lock” or “catch”.
How Can We Help?
Our physiotherapists have an extensive range of experience in treating
patients with cartilage damage for both pre-surgery and post-surgical stages of
physiotherapy. Physiotherapy intervention are required post-surgery to manage
stiffness as well as pain, on top of helping the individual to regain mobility
in the repaired structures. Physiotherapy helps to accelerate the recovery of
independence as well as regain one’s active lifestyle. In many cases, doses of
ultrasound therapy will help the soft tissues to recover faster.
Our physiotherapists, hand therapists and sports massage therapists work
with many orthopaedic doctors, sports physicians and general practitioners and
we are more than happy to refer patients to specialists where appropriate.
It is recommended that you attend physiotherapy for therapy and
rehabilitation following surgery (be it arthroscopy, total joint replacement or
ORIF) on joints such as knees, shoulders, elbows and ankle to return back to
normal and active life as quick as possible.
It is highly recommended that you attend Physiotherapy for rehabilitation
following keyhole surgery or arthoscopy on knees and shoulders or after a knee
or hip replacement operation or after operations to insert metals plates or
pins into various joints.
What Can You Expect?
What our physiotherapists, hand therapists and sports massage therapists
will do is to prescribe a customized and tailored exercise program to help you
regain muscle strength and movement so that you can return to mobility and
function as soon as possible.
Where necessary, we may also teach you how to use
mobility aids such as crutches or supports, and we will make sure that you can
engage in basic movement safely, such as getting up, standing, walking around
and managing stairs. You should continue to see the physiotherapist until you
have optimal function from the repaired joint or structure, and we’ll be more
than happy to serve.
The best way to reduce joint pain, quite frankly, may simply be to
pursue natural treatment for arthritis with a joint relief supplement
with chondroitin and glucosamine. Multiple
studies demonstrate these two compounds not only reduce joint pain, they may
also protect cartilage and offer greater mobility. That's more that most
arthritis medications offer, and probably safer as well.
Try Joint Relief Solution. A blend of natural ingredients,
including glucosamine and chondroitin, it's also formulated with willow bark
extract. You might be surprised to learn that willow bark has the same active
ingredient as aspirin, and shows dramatic reduction in pain symptoms, with less
reliance on NSAIDs as well.
