Complex regional pain syndrome is painful condition which occurs following
an injury. The pain is often chronic (long term), and continues long after the
initial injury has recovered. Oftentimes, the injury is small and one that

Any forms of long term pain is a difficult state to be in, and while chronic
regional pain syndrome may be difficult to manage, the main physiotherapy, hand
therapy and occupational therapy goals and interventions are to provide pain
relief, to increase mobility and increase participation and function inasmuch
as possible in daily living.
In our physiotherapy clinic, we will start with providing pain relief
strategies and treatment to decrease pain, at the same time, providing
mobilization to ensure that the bone, joint and muscle as well as other soft
tissue's integrity is not compromised. This will be done by a combination of
exercise therapy (passive ranging, joint mobilization as well as strengthening
exercises). When coupled with heat therapy and cold therapy, it improves pain
relief and mobility for most patients with chronic regional pain syndrome.
There are two main types: Type 1 is known by a few terms, such as reflex
sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), Sudeck's atrophy, reflex neurovascular dystrophy
(RND) or algoneurodystrophy; and the main factor is that is does not have
obvious or noticeable nerve damage involved. Type 2 is known as causalgia, and
most of the time, it has nerve damage involved.
Early physiotherapy, hand therapy and occupational therapy interventions are
effective and will help with mobility, function and pain relief.
