Most of the time, dancing injuries are mainly caused by overuse (repetitive trauma) rather than any direct traumatic damage (but that can happen from slips and falls).
As dance can be very repetitive yet very intensive at the same time; coupled with long practice duration and frequent, which combines to be very detrimental to the human body (but, it can be so good for the human soul and mind), Even though I can't dance myself, but I enjoy watching and marvel when people dance and are able to move myself (and others') emotions through dance.
As dancers, performing dance-specific daily stretches which are customized for your type of dancing (such as break dance, hip hop, Irish dancing or any forms of dancing) can improve your skills and reduce risk and prevalence of any dance-related injuries and pains.
The more common dancers' problems includes ankles pains and ankle sprains, achilles tendinopathy, shin splints and low back pain. On top of that, many dancers also suffer from musle strains, joint strains, ligament sprains and joint pains as well. There are much more injuries that people who enjoys dancing can get, but we just list down the most common ones that they get.
the long list of injuries and pains dancers can get, it becomes
extremely vital for physiotherapy to assess, diagnose and treat dance
injuries accurately, as if dancers continue their regular practice and
competitions whilst being injured, that can cause more aggravation and
serious injuries with permanent implication.
For dancers, we always have to think of how we can prolong their passion and ability to dance for the long term, and I'm quite sure all dancers will want to dance for the rest of their lives, be it personally or competitively =)
Depending on the type, location and severity of the dancing-related injuries, our physiotherapists may prescribe a variety of treatments and stretching exercises to ensure we target the core of the problem.
You may also be placed on a mix of management, such as core strengthening program, clinical pilates, ultrasound therapy to accelerate soft tissue healing, and even mobilization of soft tissues and joints to loosen structures.
Often, dancers find having regular sports massage therapy with us to be particularly beneficial to help accelerate their muscles ache and injuries.
