Dizziness is an impairment in the areas of spatial perception and
physical stability, but it is an imprecise term. It can mean any of four
things: (1) vertigo (spinning); (2) presyncope (event prior to a
fainting episode); (3) disequilibrium (loss of balance) and (4) a
non-specific feeling such as giddiness or even foolishness.
patients or persons can induce the episode by participating or engaging
in activities that causes disorientation, such as spinning (on one own,
in a play ground, in plays in fairs etc).
refers to a specific medical term used to describe the event or
sensation of spinning or having one's environment spin around them. It
is very disturbing, and many people and patients often complain of
post-vertigo nausea and vomiting.
the feeling or the sense of losing balance, or loss of balance, as is
very often characterized by frequent falls in a specific direction,
often without nausea or vomiting.
Presyncope is the
feeling or the sensation prior to a fainting episode, and patients often
share on feeling lightheaded, muscle weakness and feeling like they're
about to faint. It does not often have nausea or vomiting.
specific giddiness on the other hand, is often psychological in nature.
It can be brought about by hyperventilation, such as an anxiety
situations and conditions can cause giddiness because many parts of the
body are used and required to maintain balance, which includes the
inner ears, muscles, eyes, skeleton and our neurological system.
Common physiological causes of dizziness include:
- inadequate blood supply to the brain
- a sudden fall in blood pressure
- heart problems or artery blockages
- loss or distortion of vision or visual cues
- disorders of the inner ear
- distortion of brain/nervous function by medications such as anticonvulsants and sedatives
