The most common complaints of elbow pain are golfer’s elbow and tennis
elbow. They generally fall into the overuse, repetitive strain injury
category, but a quick summary on both conditions can be found below:
Golfers Elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis is a condition of
overstrained structure on inner elbow where pain is experienced around
the inner side of the elbow and may travel down to the rest of the arm.
Although the name would lead you to believe that it is a problem only
experienced by keen golfers, this is not the case.
also known as lateral epicondylitis is a condition of overstrained
elbow on the outer side. Even though it’s called tennis elbow, this
condition does not just afflict tennis players or professionals. In
fact, this common elbow problem (it affects about 3% of the population)
is most often associated with work-related activities, although racquet
sports players are more prone to the condition and account for
approximately 5% of all sufferers. Tennis Elbow usually occurs in the
Common Elbow Pain Symptoms
Golfers Elbow can be diagnosed by describing the pain you are experiencing. For example if you feel pain when touching the innermost part of the elbow or if the pain worsens when you grasp something. The pain is often felt when carrying out everyday action, especially when gripping is involved and something like turning a door handle can cause intense pain.
Tennis Elbow is characterised by pain over the outer side of the elbow, which may radiate down the forearm. There is pain when the Lateral Epicondyle (outermost part of the elbow) is touched, and also if the elbow is straight and the hand is moved forward and back at the wrist. The elbow pain is made worse by gripping activities and, in some cases, simple things like shaking hands or squeezing objects can be extremely painful.
What Physiotherapy, Hand Therapy and Sports Massage Can Do For You
We have all three disciplines in our clinic: physiotherapists, hand therapists and sports massage therapists who play different roles in the management of elbow pain, specifically golfer’s and tennis elbow. Both conditions often begin as inflammation of the common flexor or extensor origin in the elbow.
What our physiotherapists will do is to first diagnose (and do differential diagnosis to know exactly what you have) your condition and to provide appropriate treatment, exercises and advice to manage your conditions. During the early phases, when it’s most acute and inflammatory, physios often will apply cold therapy to bring down the swelling and couple the treatment with electrotherapy such as ultrasound to accelerate healing at a physiological level. Rest is important but sometimes because of lifestyle restrictions, then a compression strap will be useful in reducing stress on the painful area. Once the inflammation has subsided, rehabilitation under supervision of physiotherapists will help to cure the problem and prevent recurrence. Progressive strengthening will be introduced as evidence and literature has demonstrated that it’s the best long term approach to managing elbow problems.
Hand therapists may be engaged to fabricate splints to block very acute or painful elbow pain conditions. Using thermoplastics material, patients will have a made-to-measure splint to allow the affected limb to rest and restrict movement as much as possible.
Deep tissue release and sports massage therapists will help in decreasing muscles spasms secondary to the pains. You see, in a very painful and oftentime chronic pain elbow, prolonged muscle bracing can cause painful spasms that can be managed will the skilful hands of the sports massage therapist. Where applicable, tight knots that are also known as trigger points are also managed to decrease the pull on the golfer’s and tennis’ elbow tendon insertion.
