The footballers ankle
is a soft tissue injury i.e. an injury to non-bony tissue of the ankle, such as
the muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerve of the ankle. Specifically, it is a
pinching or impingement of ligaments or tendons of the ankle between the bones,
especially the talus and tibia bone, which results in inflammation and
swelling. Given the dynamic and intensive yet fun nature of football, such
injuries are actually quite commonplace.
What Are The Common Causes
A common cause is a
bone spur on the talus (the ankle bone) or the tibia bone (shin bone). How this
happens is that repeated kicking actions can cause the ankle bone to hit the
bottom of the shin bone repeatedly, leading to a bony lump (known as a bone
spur) to develop. Slowly, this bone spur begins to press onto other structures
and soft tissue at the front of the ankle, leading to inflammation and
swelling. This condition is common in athletes who repeatedly bend the ankle
upwards (commonly termed as dorsiflexion), such as footballers (hence the
