Frozen Shoulder and Physiotherapy Singapore
Frozen shoulder, medicalled termed as adhesive capsulitis, is a
shoulder capsule disorder, where the connective tissues around the
shoulder joint (the glenohumeral joint) becomes swollen, inflamed and
stiff, reducing its movement severely and leading to persistent pain.
It is very painful, and debilitating, frustrating patients and
caregivers because it is a condition that recovers slowly. The range of
motion for the shoulder is greatly limited, with ongoing persistent pain
that worsens at night and during colder temperatures. These combine to
make activities and life seem difficult and impossible. Sometimes, very
small movements or 'taps' by people or objects can lead to severe pain
and cramping that can last for more than a few minutes.
often starts first with a shoulder that is painful to move, and with
greatly diminished movement. Over time, the pain resolves (anything from
3 - 12 months) but the stiffness in the shoulder worsens. What happens
is that the pain goes away but the stiffness stays behind.
and hand therapy intervention often begin with pain relief first, and
as the pain relief improves, we will actively intervene for the problem
of limited mobility and stiffness. Early physiotherapy and hand therapy
intervention can usually reduce and prevent the full-blown onset of a
frozen shoulder. Treatment will be a mix of manual soft tissue
stretching, deep tissue massage, soft tissue release, coupled with a
very specific home program of exercise and movement therapy for our
patient to do between physiotherapy sessions.
exact cause is unknown, lasting anything from 3 months to 5 years or
more. Patients who suffer from this usually also suffer problems
sleeping because of the pain in the shoulder that increases at night, or
when it is cold, or when immobilized in a particular posture for
prolonged periods. This condition can also lead to back and neck
problems, depression and chronic pain; affecting work, life and
