Golfing, Wrist Injuries and Physiotherapy

For appointments/enquiries, please SMS/Call/WhatsApp xx

The majority of golf injuries are overuse injuries of the wrist flexor or extensor tendons. The left wrist (in the right-handed golfer) is the most common location. Analysis of the golf swing finds excessive motion of the left wrist (in the right-handed golfer), along with a catapulting function, accounting for vulnerability of the left wrist to injury. Excessive dorsiflexion and ulnar deviation of the right wrist may cause a tear of the triangular fibrocartilage complex. It may be successfully treated nonoperatively, but may require restriction from golf for an extended period of time.

The triangular fibrocartilage complex lies between the ulna and the carpus. It is the major stabilizer of the distal radioulnar joint.  The triangular fibrocartilage complex is a common site of ulnar wrist pain. Compressive loads on the wrist, especially when accompanied by ulnar deviation during a golf swing, can cause a tear in the central portion of the cartilage.

  • Tenderness and swelling over the dorsal ulnar aspect of the wrist.
  • Pain on resisted wrist dorsiflexion and ulnar deviation
  • A clicking sensation on wrist movement
  • Reduced grip strength
  • Pain attempting to life your body weight off a chair using the affected wrist.

How can we help?

Splinting: We will custome make a splint to hold lock your elbow into 90 degrees and lock your forearm into supination for approximately 6-12 weeks in order to allow for healing of the cartilage.

Ultrasound: The use of electrotherapeutic modalities such as ultrasound are often advocated and commonly used in practice for this condition. Therapeutic ultrasound is a treatment method that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to speed healing in the injured joint or muscle tissue.

Strengthening: Following splinting, we will design a program for you to regain the active range of movement in your wrist strengthening exercises to bring your muscles back to full strength.

General Advice

  • Give adequate rest to painful, swollen or inflamed areas.
  • Squeeze a tennis ball to strengthen hand, wrists, forearms and shoulder muscles.
  • Use light grip pressure. Slow the backswing, cut excess wrist motion, and avoid a steep downswing that could strike the ground
  • Use golf clubs designed to absorb vibration.
