Groin strain refers to an injury to the muscles located in the deep
muscle of the inner thigh. It is a common injury that affects the groin
muscles. Medically referred as adductor muscles, it is made up of six
muscles that form a group that spreads from the inner part of the pelvis
to the inner part of the thigh bone.
muscles are the muscles that pulls the leg together, and also help with
the movements related to the hip joint. The adductor muscles are very
important to a range of athletes such as sprinters, soccer and football
A strain in the groin will result in pain and
weakness in the groin region, markedly affecting the person's ability
for dynamic changes in movement direction and much limited power to kick
or propel forward.
How does the groin gets strained?
the muscles of the groin is dynamically stretched beyond its limits,
causing tears (range from mild to full rupture). The tear is referred to
as a groin strain, and depending on the severity, it is classified as
first, second and/or third degree strains.
immediate treatment for a groin injury is the RICE method - plenty of
Rest, Ice the area to minimize inflammation and swelling, Compression
and Elevation to manage the swelling. This process is very important
that it needs to be done properly and correctly to reduce the amount of
bleed and subsequent secondary tissue damage within the groin muscle.
Once the acute stage has stabilized, then we can start more active
start you on gentle exercise using resistive bands and stretches to help
to re-align the scar tissue that forms as a result of the healing
process. As we align the scar tissue, the muscle strength improves and
it will improve performance and mobility. How much active physiotherapy
you will begin with depends on the severity of the injury and the
clinical reasoning done by the physiotherapist.
