Heel Spur and Physiotherapy Singapore
A heel spur refers to the hook of bone that forms on the bone of the
heel (this refers to the calcaneus bone). This diagnose is often
confused with plantar fasciitis, but they are not the same, though they
are more confused with tarsal tunnel syndrome.
spurs are common incidences in patients who have previous history of
heel and foot pain, which are often caused by plantar fasciitis – the
diagnosis is confirmed when the X-Ray of the feet shows a hook, a
protusion of bone from the bottom of the foot where the plantar fascia
attaches to the calcaneus heel bone.
The plantar fascia refers to
the thick connective tissue that connects the calcaneus (heel bone) to
the ball of the feet. It is this strong and tight tissue that helps
maintain the arch of the foot, actually. It is also one of the major
weight distributors of the foot as you walk or run on your foot. They
commonly form in patients who have existing plantar fasciitis, and
tends to recur and occur in patients who has had the conditions for an
extended period of time.
It by itself is not
the cause of pain, though it can cause some discomfort, depending on
its shape and location. Most of the pain are usually caused by plantar
fasciitis, which is inflammation and irritation of the plantar fascia.
What Is The PhysiotherapyTreatment of Spurs in Heels?
The physiotherapy intervention of heel spurs are exactly the same as the physiotherapy treatment of plantar fasciitis. To
diagnose accurately, our certified physiotherapists will perform an
assessment clinically and through medical history review, ruling out
possible causes for heel pain other than plantar fasciitis.
Then, the following physiotherapy treatments may be used:
Muscles, joints and soft tissues around the foot and ankle can be
treated using the mobilization techniques, where our physiotherapists
will gently move the structures and joint to decrease the stiffness and
to restore the normal range of movement. Gentle deep tissue release may release secondary tightness caused by pain.
Taping and Strapping:
Taping and strapping has been clinically proven to be effective for
plantar fasciitis management. The taping supports the plantar fascia and
helps disperse the force and weight
Rest: Rest is very
important to all injuries that are traumatic or overuse in nature – to
take the strain off the plantar fascia, and to allow the affected tissue
time to rest and heal up.
