Calcaneus Stress Fractures
This bone can get fractured by repetitive strain and stress, and this
condition is referred as Heel Stress Fracture. It is commonly seen in soldiers
who marches a lot or athletes who are long distance joggers or runners. Stress
fractures are caused by overuse and they are different from traumatic
fractures, which are caused by high-impact injuries such as falls from heights,
or road traffic accidents.

the symptoms of calcaneal stress fractures includes:
- Inability to walk,
- Swelling of the foot,
- Bruising of the foot and/or
- Severe heel pain
of Calcaneus Fractures
suspect you have a calcaneus stress fracture, or an ankle injury, you should
arrange for a session with your doctor. He or she will most likely send you for
an X-ray to confirm at ligamental or bony injuries.
intervention would include resting so that the bone can heal properly first,
icing to decrease any inflammation or muscle spasms. If the fracture is stable,
we will begin with gentle active range of motion exercises to preserve the
range of motion of the affected joints. During this time, we will work to
decrease the amount of pain level experienced, maintain or increase joint range
of motion, and make sure that the bone isn't reinjured.
also liaise and communicate closely with the referring doctor, and once they
have confirmed that the bone has united or become more stable, then can we work
on more active exercises. It may take some time before we can progress you to
full weight bearing walking and running, but we will start to get you back on
your feet, to walk normally, and eventually run.
In some patients, we may even have to do balance retraining and strength
conditioning before we can discharge them.
