When our body's lymphatic system becomes blocked due to damage or whatever reasons, the lymphatic fluids will get blocked and accumulated in the tissues, causing long term swelling in different parts of our bodies.
Patients who suffer from lymphoedema, and is seeking treatment for it should only be seen and treated by a qualified and traind therapist - always look for a practitioner with an appropriate qualification such as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) certification.
Most of the time, lymphoedema affects the limbs (arms and legs) more of the time, but can also occur in other areas such as the face, the genitals, neck and abdomen as well as the internal organs.
Babies can be born with it, but it can also be caused by damage to the body's natural lymphatic system, such as radiotherapy after cancer treatments, or from nasty infections, severe injuries or any other forms of trauma that is introduced to the body and its lymphatic system.
Unfortunately, lymphoedema cannot be prevented or treated to a 100% cure, but trained and experienced manual lymphatic drainage therapists can help to reduce and prevent the uncomfortable effects.
Manual lymphatic drainage therapists or physiotherapists who are trained in the management of this condition primarily uses manual lymphatic drainage, which is the draining of lymphatic fluid from tissues, as well as the application of multiple layers bandaging, caring for your skin as well as prescribing exercises to accelerate the dispersement of the accumulated fluids.
In some of the cases with our patients, the therapists may employ the use of specific positioning to encourage an even higher level of drainage with the help of gravity.
They may also advise on the use of special sleeves or support stockings as well as provide general advice to further improve the condition and not do anything to worsen it.
Depending on the severity of the condition, you may require to start frequently first for the initial few weeks to months, then gently taper off to maybe once or twice a week, and then to once per week for maintenance and management, to ensure the edema is kept at bay.
At any point in time even during the maintenance or management phase if you find that you have a flare up of lymphoedema, please call in to book at least two to three lymphoedema therapy singapore appointments for the week, spaced at least a day a part (but the therapist will advise if you need more or less sessions)
