Postural correction physiotherapy is a physiotherapy-guided exercises
of correcting muscle imbalance through exercise, stretching, and
awareness training. It can treat the most commonly imbalanced muscles
such as the anterior pelvic tilt deficit (causing the belly to
protude/stick out as well as a indentation in the lower back), and the
other second most common is the shoulder-hunched with head-neck
protusion. Both contributes to back pain and/or neck pain and aches, and
can usually be corrected with physiotherapy posture correction
exercises and stretches.
To start the correction physiotherapy, we must first understand what is muscle
imbalance and what causes it - a muscle imbalance is caused by poorly
supported or weakened joint and joint tissues and muscles surrounding
the joint. This constant state of prolonged stretch or constriction
leads to some tissues and muscles shortening in length and some becoming
weaker than others. Some gets overused and gets stronger. This causes
imbalance of the integrity of joints and muscles. Often, regular deep tissue release can help.
imbalance are usually caused by a combination of factors, such as
sedentary lifestyle (decreased activity and exercises, long hours seated
etc), improper postural and mobility habits and poor awareness. Our
body adapts to situations, so if we start sitting too long, we conform
to the shape of our workstations and worksites; if we stop exercising,
we conform to the mass of one who does not exercise and if we
overeat/eat unhealthily, we conform to one who is that. The anterior
pelvic muscles weakness is primarily caused by prolonged sitting,
because the flexor muscles of the hips becomes shortened and tight, and
the muscles of the back becomes weak and loose, leading to low back
Physiotherapy postural correction for anterior pelvic tilt muscles
much anterior pelvic tilt imbalance increases the indentation in the
back and gives rise to the belly/abdomen protuding outwards, often
contributing to back pain in many of the clients we see.
start off after the physiotherapy postural correction assessment, we
will begin with the application of hotpack over the tightened and
weakened muscles to loosen the structures, followed by gentle passive
stretches to further stretch tight muscles. Following that, patients
will be given a range-of-motion exercise program to increase the active
range of motion for the affected joints to loosen the muscles and
joints, before we provide them with a set of strengthening exercise to
strengthen up weakened muscles.
Often, we will pair
the physiotherapy treatment session with a mirror-awareness session, so
that patients would gain an insight to the postural habits they carry,
to increase the awareness of how their bodies actually move, to correct
any postural deficits and limitations.
