The pilates reformer for rehabilitation is a piece of exercise equipment that we use in our Specialist Rehab Group Singapore @ Raffles Place branch to incorporate Pilates exercises into our therapy and fitness programs.
What this reformer does is that it adds layers of resistance to these exercises as you perform the specific exercises which in turn, targets very specific areas of your body.
This additional layers of resistance can increase your rehabilitation and fitness workout significantly, and helps to improve your endurance, flexibility, core strength and posture...and this translates to less pain, improved stamina, you walk taller, faster and stronger.
Pilates Reformer For Rehabilitation & What It Does
Pilates exercises strengthens your core muscles (core muscles refer to the muscles central to your body) in a uniformed manner so that your core muscles can better support and balance your spine in order to build and maintain good posture as you move.
This is vital, as having good posture as you stand is the easy part - it's the having good form and posture as you move, run, workout and react to situations that challenges your body most of the time.
You see, when our core is weak, our body and torso will not have the stability to move efficiently or with power. So what happens is that the person with the weak core will then compensate and rely more on their hands, legs or back muscles to provide the support the spine needs when moving.
This creates a downwards-spiraling effect.
Then your limbs will not be able to move efficiently, your muscles are overused and even strained. You may develop imbalanced muscles, poor postural habits...and all these work together negatively towards the conclusive development of recurring pain that may get worse over time.
The benefits of using this reformer is that the reformer is often also
used to correct postural imbalances, scoliosis, muscle imbalances, post
partum weaknesses or physiotherapy and rehabilitation following an injury.
Pilates Reformer For Rehabilitation & Its Benefits
Having regular pilates is one of the best ways you can build and maintain a healthy back and joint mobility.
Our pilates clients find that they usually achieve (without realizing it, through pilates):
coordination, and balance;
more balanced, streamlined
a more proportional distribution of body and
weight; and even
Pilates builds confidence and motivates
you to perform other activities better!
How we structure the rehabilitation and gradually move towards a focus on wellness, fitness and strength is as followed below:
Therapy > Therapy + Pilates > Pilates For Fitness
Clients and patients go through our unique system to help you firstly to recover from your injuries, and then to level up your fitness and wellness so that you become stronger and fitter than before your injury.
The challenges of most usual healthcare approaches are that they deal more with symptoms and with short-termed approaches, rather than long-term management and prevention. Usually patients who have been discharged may still have muscle imbalances and improper movement patterns, which means higher risk of re-injury.
Stage #1: Initial Rehabilitation With Physiotherapy
What physiotherapists does is to employ manual physiotherapy treatments such as manual therapy, soft tissue management, joint mobilizations, nerve glidings, exercise therapy, electrotherapy and home exercise programs.
Then, they will introduce to them clinical pilates or physio-pilates exercises either on the mat (termed as "matwork") or reformer.
Stage #1 is for patients with an acute (fresh) injury, or who are referred by doctors, surgeons and other healthcare professionals.
Stage #2: Rehabilitation Plus Conditioning With Clinical Physio-Pilates
Pilates-trained physiotherapists then combines physiotherapy intervention in stage #1 as well as pilates exercises to improve your core strength, stamina and flexibility.
They will identify any inadequate movement patterns as well as any muscle imbalances, and will customize therapy, rehabilitation and conditioning according to what your body needs specifically.
Stage #3: Fitness, Conditioning & Strengthening With Pilates
When your injury has been resolved and you're no longer in pain, then we will "level you up" to pilates with focus on fitness, conditioning and strengthening.
This helps you to further build and maintain you strength, stamina, flexibility as well as posture, prevent recurrence of injury and even improve the way you move and function.
