Pulled Calf Muscle
A calf muscle injury is very common, and not only in sports - even during normal daily activities one can pull one's calf muscle. Calf injuries are sometimes called as a "pulled calf".
What causes it is the calf muscle is forcibly overstretched beyond its limits and the muscle tissue becomes torn. A tear in the calf muscle is called a calf strain and depending on its severity, it's given three types of classification: first, second or third degree strain.
Symptoms of a Pulled Calf Muscle
Grade one Calf
strain the signs may not be felt until after the activity is over. You may feel a sensation of cramping or tightness and a slight feeling of
pain when the muscles are stretched or contracted.
Grade two Calf
strain there is immediate pain which is more severe than the pain of a
grade one injury. It is confirmed by pain on stretch and contraction of
the muscle. A grade two Calf strain is usually sore to touch.
Grade three Calf
strain is very serious injury - immediate burning or
stabbing pain and the athlete is unable to walk without pain. The muscle
is completely torn and there may be a large lump of muscle tissue above
a depression where the tear is. After a few days with grade two and
three injuries a large bruise often will appear below the injury site caused
by the bleeding within the tissues. Unfortunately, you may need surgery to repair this injury. Our physiotherapists can test to confirm if this is the case.
Treatment for Pulled Calf Muscle
The immediate treatment for a calf muscle injury is the RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevation to manage inflammation and swelling. It's vital that this is done correctly, and our physiotherapists will not only advise you on this, but they will also perform it for you.
The mean focus is to decrease the bleeding and secondary tissue damage inside the calf muscle. Only after the earlier painful stages have been spent resting, when the calf is adequately rested, then can we start more active rehabilitation.
Gentle resisted exercises using resistance bands as well as stretching exercises are crucial to help align the scar tissue that forms during the muscle healing process. By aligning the scar tissue along the normal lines of muscle tissue stress, the tensile strength of the healing calf muscle is increased.
The physiotherapists may start with gentle resistance at first, but as your muscle gets stronger then more stronger resistance bands will be provided to challenge your muscles and improve your performance.
The sets and repetitions are gradually increased and eventually we can start to work on things such as core strengthening and more challenging exercises.
