Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and Physiotherapy
Often abbreviated to RSD, this condition refers to a very complex and multiple-symptoms pain condition, that can affect one or more limbs. It can happen to any person of any age, from young to old.
RSD usually happens after there is tissue damage to the limbs, but can also be triggered by diseases in the soft tissues such as nerves and organs, or unknown causes.
Even though reflex sympathetic dystrophy can happen at any age, this condition is much more common to individuals between forty (40) and sixty (60) years of age. However, there are increasing number of RSD cases amongst adolescents and young adults in the recent years though.
Both men and women are affected, but it is more frequently seen in women.
Most of the time, RSD affects the hands or feet, but it may sometimes involve your knees, hips, shoulder, or other sites. The main tell-tale symptom is very severe and intense, ongoing pain, often a burning-like sensation.
This condition may gradually cause muscle dystrophy (muscle wastage) of the affected area, which is why early diagnosis and accurate intervention is very important.
To be frank, there is no one single test to diagose RSD - diagnosis is very clinical and is reached through clinical observations of signs and symptoms.
For best clinical outcomes, RSD needs to be diagnosed and treated within the first three to six months - any later and the outcomes are progressively poorer.
The most important aspect of treating RSD is the restoration of normal movement and function to the affected limbs or parts.
The condition is the easiest to treat in the early stages, and most of the treatment is based on the patient's courage in actively moving the affected hand or leg again, despite pain or discomfort.
Physiotherapy and/or hand therapy intervention will help to maintain and increase range, mobility, function and strength, on top of pain management. We may also use modalities such as ultrasound therapy to decrease inflammation, progressive stretching to glide soft tissues and joints and gradually to strengthening (not all on the first day, of course)
Sometimes, we may administer a TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator), which may prove useful to relieve pain by blocking your pain nerve.
