Runners Knee Causes, Symptoms and Physiotherapy Treatment
Runners knee is a painful overuse-related knee injury that affects the outer part of your knee - causing lots of pain especially when you run or cycle. It is a fairly common injury in both runners and cyclists, affecting an average of 2-10% of all runners and 25% of all cyclists - a significant amount.
Common Symptoms of Runner’s Knee
Basically there is the presence of pain located on the outer side of your knee joint. This pain may radiate upwards up the thigh or downwards towards the outer side of your shin. The pain may be aggravated by activities that involves running and/or cycling.
Most of the time, the pain is very situational - it is present (and exarcebated) during cycling and running activities, and settles when one rests. That being said, in some cases, it can also be extremely painful and uncomfortable when going up or down the stairs.
The good news is that almost all cases respond well to physiotherapy treatment. Physiotherapy aims are to manage the localized inflammatory response to provide immediate pain relief, followed by identifying and managing any underlying postural and body alignment issues that may be causing or aggravating the condition.
Some of the aggravating factors:
leg length discrepancies
walking/running posiiton where the arch of the feet lowers during running
What will our physios do?
What our physiotherapists will do is to check for all these items during the physical assessment and provide specific training and techniques to correct these issues before the person can return to full activity, so that we can prevent a recurrence of runners knee.
As we manage the causes of the injury, we will also provide you a strengthening program to strengthen up structures that are weaker to provide a good support system to prevent this injury and pain from coming back.
In some mild cases, a knee strap will suffice to provide pain relief effectively during jogging and running.
