Spondylitis is a very common cause of back pain and neck pain, and is really an inflammation of the joints in your back and neck.
Generally there are two main group types of spondylitis, and it is basically a division of different locations:
Neck (cervical) spondylitis - inflammation of the neck joints
Back (lumbar) spondylitis - inflammation of back (upper and lower)
There is another related condition known as ankylosing spondylitis, which refers to an autoimmune diseases, and it affects a younger group of audience.
Most of the time, the common aggravating factors are basically mechanical strains and forces that impact the joint. These forces can either come from very specific activities that causes heavier strains on the necks or having environments that forces or encourages awkward positions of the neck...leading to increased strain and stress in the spine.
An example is when we come across patients who are very heavy PC and laptop users (especially laptops users and users of more than one screens) - they would often crane their neck forward PLUS raise their heads in hyper-extension patterns. Over time, this damages the joints in the neck.
In fact, in fast paced and moving Singapore, we observe many individuals including executives and non executives who use their mobile phones with a very, very flexed (bent) neck, and this too can have the same impact like the example above, just that the force is on the reversed side.
In the beginning, patients often starts with pain and stiffness in their backs and necks, and this is quite common in spondylitis.
