How Physiotherapy Can Help
Spondylosis refers a certain type of osteoarthritis of the joints in the vertebrae, affecting the center of the spinal vertebrae and/or the neural foramina. If the same condition affect the zygapophysial joints, it is considered a facet syndrome.
In severe cases, it may cause additional pressue on nerve roots that run in the spine, and this leads to nerve-related problems such as pain, numbness or weakness in the limbs.
If the space between the two spine bones (vertebraes) narrows, the compression of the nerve room results in a term called radiculopathy (patients may experience sensory and motor disturbances, such as severe pain in the neck, shoulder, arm, back, andor leg, accompanied by muscle weakness).
In a less common scenario, direct pressure on the spinal cord (usually in the neck/cervical spine) may result in myelopathy, which then patients may experience an overall global weakness, difficulty walking, losing balance easily, and sometimes has problem with controlling their bladder or bowel. Patients may also experience numbness and electrical sensation in the hands and legs because of nerve compression and decreased blood flow.
Causes of Spondylosis Physiotherapy Singapore
To be frank, this condition can affect any person at any age, though older people are more prone to this condition, due to its nature of wear and tear predominantly.
There is several tests that can be done:
- Spurling's test is performed by side flexing the patient's head and placing downward pressure on it. A positive sign is neck or shoulder pain on the ipsilateral side, that is, the side to which the head is laterally flexed is predictive of cervical spondylosis.
- Lhermitte sign, feeling of electrical shock with neck flexion; reduced range of motion of the neck, the most frequent objective finding on physical examination
- Imaging - MRI testing. This test is non-invasive and provides the only definitive positive diagnosis.
Treatments For Spondylosis Physiotherapy Singapore
It's a nice thing to know that conservative management and treatment of spondylosis is successful 75% of the time - this means that out of 100 patients, 75 of them responds well and successfully to physiotherapy.
Many patients fill their pain and other spondylosis-related symptoms can be effectively treated and managed without surgery, actually.
In the acute phase, patients may be prescribed some anti-inflammatories, pain medications and muscle relaxants to decrease the level of pain experience. In some cases, the affected structure may need to be immobilized by a neck brace, to prevent external forces from causing additional damage to the area.
For cervical spondylosis in particular, patients may be prescribed a soft cervical collar to decrease movements in the neck, which may help to decrease pain experienced.
For lumbar (lower back) spondylosis, you may be prescribed a lumbosacral orthothic device, which will help to decrease the load on your lower back by stabilizing your lower back spine.
Spondylosis Physiotherapy Singapore sessions will include the assessment and treatment modalities including heat therapy to relax the muscles, ultrasound therapy to accelerate soft tissue healing, gentle manipulation and mobilizations to loosen and glide the soft tissues and more, to control the muscle spasm and pain level.
Our trained spine physios will also prepare a customized exercise and movement rehab program catered to you, to strengthen the muscles around the injured area, so that you can decrease the need of the neck or back brace.
It is vital that we exercise the right muscles. For spondylosis, the muscles specifically supporting your spine is the main core muscles.
