Sports Taping - Rigid Sports Taping
For appointments/enquiries, please SMS/Call/WhatsApp xx
The function of rigid sports taping is to prevent injury and at the same time, facilitate the injured sportsman/sportswomen/athlete to return to competition. Generally, the rigid tape limits abnormal and/or excessive movement of a sprained joint whilst supporting the muscles that are compromised by the sprain.
To add to the benefits of having rigid taping, having these supportive structures helps enhance the proprioceptive feedback to the sprained joint during performance (is this important? Yes, very much so - often our proprioceptive system is the first to go during an injury, and without a proper functioning proprioceptive system, our body is unable to "tell" where our injured joint is, increasing risks of injury)
To illustrate, athletes who have injured their rotator cuff in their shoulder will receive sensory cues from the applied rigid sports tape before it limits instability.
This acts as an early external proprioceptive feedback that helps the athlete to actively or subconsiously contract the muscles that limits instability. Likewise, sportspeople and athletes involved in ball and racquet games will receive sensory cues from a taped knee or ankle.
In situations such as these, rigid taping is more appropriate and effective in their function to provide early proprioceptive feedback rather than their original function to limit the excessive motion, but both functions work in tandem.
To sum it down, the purposes of rigid sports taping includes:
- supporting ligaments and capsules of unstable joints by blocking and limiting abnormal anatomical movement
- Early proprioceptive feedback enhance sensory cues in injured limbs and joints
- Compressive and limiting ability helps to prevents further aggravation to muscle-tendon units
- Helps to secure splints, protective padding and dressing in place
