TCM Chinese Medicine for irritable bowel syndrome
Many sufferers of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) seek and receive relief with acupuncture and chinese medicine.
While some medical practitioners use IBS as a "one size fits all" diagnosis, practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach IBS on an individual, symptom-by-symptom basis. Avoiding a standard IBS diagnosis helps to avoid a blanket IBS treatment. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, what is commonly referred to as IBS is mainly caused by the infection of the gastrointestinal system. In TCM, infection is believed to be caused by the pathogenic factors of dampness and heat, either obtained externally (such as from weather) or generated internally (such as internal injury from improper food).
Traditional Chinese Medicine uses acupuncture and cupping to remove dampness and heat from within the system by selecting certain acupuncture points along the meridians of the stomach and large intestine. This causes IBS symptoms to dissipate. At the same time, acupuncture techniques can be used to strengthen the body's immune system and also to relieve stress, thereby preventing future exacerbation of the disorder.
How is TCM chinese medicine for irritable bowel syndrome done
At the start of the therapy, assessment and pulse and tongue diagnosis will be done by the TCM physician to understand your general state of health. Depending on different individual conditions, treatment may comprise of different TCM techniques such as acupuncture, cupping, castor oil therapy, auricular therapy etc. Each session can be 30min, 60 min or 1 and a half hours long.
A complete course of treatment is usually 6 to 8 sessions, with 1 to 2 sessions a week (sometimes less, sometimes more). More frequent treatments are recommended initially (for example 2 to 3 sessions a week) to promote faster recovery. In some cases, you may require ongoing maintenance therapy following the acute phase. However, the measure of improvement also depends on the individual. Factors such as diet, exercise and lifestyle also contribute to the effectiveness of the treatments.
Hence it is also recommended that one observes some important lifestyle changes to promote recovery during treatments:
- Maintain a regular eating habit consisting of high fiber
- Refrain from heavy and large meals that are high in fat
- Drink plenty of water daily
- Avoid smoking
- Have a regular toilet schedule.
- Exercise regularly to help relieve stress, which is a factor that seems to exacerbate the disorder.
