Wallets Causing Back Pain - is this true?
Keeping wallet in back pocket leads to backpain or sciatica
Back pain (low back pain or mid back pain) is one of the most familiar
complaints and disorder that we see and treat in our clinic. This is
quite consistent with research papers, who suggests that at least three
out of four person (75%) have experienced back pain at least once in
their lives. Of these 75%, a significant number of them live with
chronic back pain.
Other than wallets causing back pain, there are really many causes for
back pain, simply because there are many structures biomechanically one
can injure in the back. You see, the back has a large mix of nerves,
muscles, discs, bones, ligaments - injure any one of these and you can
get a pain in the back. However, common causes includes intense sporting
and forceful recreational activities, heavy labor, sitting and sleeping
in wrong posture for long hours or any other musculoskeletal sprain or
strain. Unfortunately, they are commonly misdiagnosed and identified as

Is keeping wallets in back pocket that bad?
Here's a frank truth - I (Nigel) personally
suffered long term low back pain (about 3 years) largely because I sat
with my wallet in my back pocket. To be specific, my wallet was always
on my right back pocket, and my low back pain was on my lower right
Sadly, even as a therapist
professionally, I didn't think about the possibility of the wallet
causing and contributing to my lower right sided back pain - I went
about treating the back with my physiotherapist, did the exercises, but
would then go back to sitting on the wallet on my right back pocket! No
wonder my lower right pain didn't go away.
So I did a little
more research about this possible cause, and I found that one of most
universally common reason behind most men back pain is an early age
habit of keeping wallet in their back pockets and sitting on it while
driving, watching TV, using the PC, working etc for a long period of
What this does is that it changes our body posture and
symmetry unnaturally, and overstretches structures unnecessarily. The
wallet acts like a fulcrum positioned under your buttock and pushes your
pelvis, spine and back muscles out of position. Multiply this over a
period of time and muscles shorten/weaken on one side, ligaments become
overstretch and your back start to compensate and things fall painfully
out of place.
So what can you do?
The answer is simplistic and obvious - install a new habit of emptying your back pockets of its contents and place into your front pockets or a designated area each time you have to sit. It may be difficult if you've been sitting on your wallet for years, but it'd take a couple of weeks to get used to it.
